A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to eight months in federal prison for reentering the United States after being deported.

Avelino Zacarias-Bail, 27, was found guilty of one count of illegal reentry into the US after pleading guilty on January 9, 2020. He had previously been deported from the US in December 2015 and reentered without permission.

Zacarias-Bail’s illegal presence in the US came to the attention of immigration agents in August 2019 after his arrest in Black Hawk County, Iowa, on state criminal charges. He was later convicted in December 2019 of child endangerment and domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury.

Zacarias-Bail was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. He must also serve a one-year term of supervised release after the prison term, with no parole in the federal system.

Zacarias-Bail is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.
