Avery Ray Brinson Sentenced to 20 Years for Firearm Possession

A 29-year-old Holly Ridge man has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars for possessing a firearm, after a violent crime spree left a witness with a sliced throat and a child stabbed seven times.

Avery Ray Brinson, a convicted felon with three or more prior convictions for violent felonies, was found guilty of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. He was sentenced to 240 months imprisonment followed by 60 months of supervised release.

The investigation into Brinson’s crimes began in May and July 2021, when the Holly Ridge Police Department investigated firearm-related offenses. On May 30, 2021, Brinson stole a firearm from a friend’s house, after discovering it was kept in the living room.

When the friend confronted Brinson about the theft, he initially denied any knowledge of the missing firearm. However, after being shown the surveillance footage from the home security system, Brinson returned the firearm and claimed it was a misunderstanding.

The following day, June 1, 2021, Brinson broke into his friend’s house again, stole multiple items, including a different firearm, and disabled the home security system by cutting the power to the entire residence. The investigation revealed that Brinson had stashed the stolen firearm under a bed at another residence, where it was later recovered by law enforcement.

On June 22, 2021, Brinson attacked a female resident of the house where he had stashed the firearm, slicing her throat and stabbing her multiple times. When a juvenile who was at the house tried to protect the female resident, he was stabbed seven times. Both victims underwent immediate medical attention and survived the attack.

U.S. Attorney Michael Easley made the announcement after the sentencing was concluded. U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan presided over the sentencing. The Holly Ridge Police Department investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Charity Wilson and William Van Trigt prosecuted the case.
