PITTSBURGH – In a stunning reversal of fortune, Keith Kristek, 57, the oncetrusted Tax Collector for Baden Borough, Pennsylvania, has been meted out a 37-month prison sentence followed by 3 years of supervised release. United States Attorney David J. Hickton disclosed the sentence on his conviction of mail fraud and filing false income tax returns.
According to court documents, Kristek’s criminal misdeeds spanned from January 2007 through February 2015, during which time he executed a scheme that siphoned over $1,060,000 in tax payments from Baden Borough and the Ambridge Area School District. His greed went unchecked as he failed to report his illicit gains and even brazenly filed false income tax returns with the IRS for the years 2011 through 2014.
United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab imposed the harsh sentence, reflecting the gravity of Kristek’s crimes. Assistant United States Attorney Lee J. Karl led the prosecution on behalf of the government.
The successful investigation and prosecution of Kristek were credited to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Beaver County District Attorney’s Office by U.S. Attorney Hickton.
For those familiar with Baden, this conviction sends a chilling message about public trust and accountability. The sentence handed down today serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law, not even a tax collector.
