Jonathan Ray Balderas, Human Smuggling, Texas 2024

LAREDO, Texas – In a gritty case of human trafficking, Jonathan Ray Balderas, a 37-year-old San Antonio resident, has been sentenced to federal prison for transporting 10 illegal aliens. According to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, Balderas pleaded guilty on February 6th.

U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo handed down a severe sentence of 41 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release. The court took into account the perilous conditions under which eight of the aliens were transported in the open bed of Balderas’s truck, covered merely by a tarp. Additionally, the discovery of a loaded pistol on Balderas’s waistband and evidence of his involvement in other smuggling events played a significant role in the sentencing.

In a statement, Ganjei emphasized the dangers of such operations: “Placing human beings in the back of a truck under a tarp while carrying a loaded firearm shows a blatant disregard for life and the law. All it would have taken is a single driver error to cause multiple people to lose their lives.” The Southern District of Texas vowed to bring justice to those profiting from illegal smuggling operations.

Craig S. Larrabee, Special Agent in Charge of ICE-HSI San Antonio, highlighted the gravity of human smuggling: “Human smuggling is a serious federal crime that endangers lives and threatens the security of our communities. HSI, in close coordination with U.S. Border Patrol, is committed to dismantling smuggling networks and holding individuals accountable for their actions.”

The arrest of Balderas and recovery of 10 smuggled aliens occurred on November 18, 2024, when law enforcement noticed a suspicious truck attempting to evade the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint. Authorities discovered eight illegal aliens in the open bed of the truck and two more hiding inside. The aliens were citizens of Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

Balderas will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. The investigation was conducted by ICE-HSI and BP with assistance from Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Game Wardens. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Tae W. Chon prosecuted the case, which is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
