Ballwin Man Sentenced for Ticket Scheme
A Ballwin man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in a ticket scheme that left several victims out of pocket.
Darrin Landes, 30, was found guilty of wire fraud charges and violating the terms of his supervised release. The scheme involved selling sporting event tickets, including tickets to the 2016 Kentucky Derby and the 2016 Masters golf tournament, without delivering them to the purchasers.
According to court documents, Landes offered to sell tickets to sporting and entertainment events between September 2015 and July 2016. He would often claim to have tickets available, but would then attempt to sell the same ticket to multiple people.
Landes would typically communicate with potential buyers via face-to-face conversations, emails, texts, and phone calls. Once a buyer agreed to purchase a ticket, Landes would instruct them to send payment via wire transfer to his PayPal account or that of one of his associates.
After receiving payment, Landes would often make excuses for not delivering the tickets, leaving buyers without their purchased items.
Landes was already on supervised release at the time of the new offense, having been convicted of wire fraud in 2014. He appeared in court today before Judge Rodney Sippel, who sentenced him to 30 months in prison.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kirkwood Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Franks handling the prosecution.
Landes’ scheme has left several victims out of pocket, and his sentencing serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious when making online purchases.
