On a cloudy March 25, 1924, in the small Illinois town of Harvey, four brazen bandits pulled off a daring daylight heist, making off with a staggering $150,000 in cash. The thieves struck at the Illinois Central station, where they overpowered employees and seized registered mail sacks containing the loot, bound for the First National Bank of Harvey to pay the wages of local manufacturing plants. The money had been transferred from the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, and the bandits were able to make their escape in a speeding automobile.
