In a shocking turn of events, three Buffalo women have pleaded guilty to bank fraud in a case that highlights the city’s struggle with financial crime. Carlique Deberry, 35, Sayonara Heath, 32, and Sade Heath, 27, all of Buffalo, N.Y., were charged with participating in a complex ‘check kiting’ scheme that targeted local area banks.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito, Jr., the defendants would open bank accounts and deposit large checks written on accounts with insufficient funds or accounts that had been closed. Before the banks could verify the checks, the defendants would withdraw smaller amounts from the accounts, making off with a mere $390.95, but putting the banks at risk of losing over $40,000.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the guilty pleas, which were accepted by U.S. Magistrate Judge Leslie G. Foschio. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, a fine of $1,000,000 or both.
The investigation, led by the United States Secret Service under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Tracy Gast, has brought the defendants to justice. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date before Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny.
