The Grimy Times has learned that Joshua Riley Spangler, a 29-year-old man from Hodgenville, Kentucky, was sentenced to 151 months in prison for robbing two banks in the state.
According to court documents, Spangler robbed the Cecilian Bank in Sonora, Kentucky, of $1,019 on January 15, 2013, and the Bank of Buffalo in Buffalo, Kentucky, of $9,125 on February 27, 2013.
Spangler, who was 24 years old at the time of the robberies, used force, violence, and intimidation to carry out the crimes, which were charged by a federal grand jury indictment on November 20, 2013.
U.S. Attorney John E. Kuhn, Jr., announced that Spangler’s sentence was handed down by Senior District Judge John G. Heyburn II in U.S. District Court.
As a result of Spangler’s prior convictions for bank robbery in Campbellsville and Hodgenville, Judge Heyburn enhanced his sentence by an additional 50 months under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Spangler faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, and a three-year period of supervised release. He will now serve 151 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Ream prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Kentucky State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Spangler will also have to pay restitution in the amount of $10,144.
