Bank Robber on the Loose in Toronto

January 2, 2013, will be a day Toronto, South Dakota, will not soon forget. At approximately 3:45 p.m., a man entered the First Bank and Trust, brandishing a large handgun and two garbage bags, and wearing a black snowmobile helmet liner or mask over his head and face. The suspect handed a garbage bag to a teller and instructed her to fill it up with money from the vault. He then forced two tellers to a back room and told them to stay there until they counted to one hundred.

As soon as the bank’s door closed, the tellers made a break for the windows and watched as the suspect sped away in a red SUV, which one of the tellers had spotted parked across the street just before the robbery. The scene was preserved, and law enforcement collected footprints and tire tread prints in the snow. A plaster cast was made of the tire tread prints, which would later prove crucial in the investigation.

Fast forward to January 22, 2013, when law enforcement interviewed 38-year-old Nathan Michael Reisetter of White, South Dakota. In a shocking turn of events, Reisetter confessed to robbing the bank and led authorities to evidence of the crime and some of the stolen money at his home. Police seized cash, guns, and the clothing worn by Reisetter on the day of the robbery.

The investigation is being conducted by the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, the SD Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant US Attorney John E. Haak will be prosecuting the case. Reisetter was remanded to the custody of the US Marshal, and a trial date has not yet been set.

The maximum penalty for bank robbery is 20 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine, plus restitution. The charge against Reisetter is merely an accusation, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

As the people of Toronto, South Dakota, breathe a sigh of relief, they are left to wonder what drove Nathan Michael Reisetter to commit such a heinous crime. The case serves as a reminder that bank robbery is a serious offense with severe consequences
