McALLEN, Texas – A chilling display of desperation turned into a 42-month prison sentence for a 26-year-old San Benito man who relied on a threatening message to rob a local bank.
Gustavo Guadalupe Guevara’s plan to hold up the Lone Star National Bank in Harlingen on November 3, 2020 was executed with a piece of paper containing a menacing note. The teller, fearing for her safety, handed over an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency, and Guevara fled the scene.
However, the getaway was short-lived. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Harlingen Police Department, launched an investigation that ultimately led to Guevara. A search of his residence uncovered a large stash of U.S. currency.
Guevara, 26, pleaded guilty to the crime on May 20. In a hearing today, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. handed down the 42-month sentence, to be followed by three years of supervised release.
The victim, who testified at the hearing, emphasized the seriousness and gravity of the offense. The court took note of the teller’s fear for her safety and the potentially traumatic impact of the event.
Guevara will remain in custody until he is transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Coronado prosecuted the case.
The investigation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance in preventing and solving crimes. As the community begins to heal, one thing is clear: those who resort to violence and intimidation will face the full force of the law.
With this conviction, the people of Texas can rest a little easier knowing that those who would seek to harm and intimidate will be held accountable.
