A brazen daylight robbery turned deadly at The Line, a bar in Momence, Illinois, on February 2, 2026. Julius Burkes, 47, allegedly used a firearm to kill the owner, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit community.
Burkes, an Indiana resident, was arrested in Hammond, Indiana, just one day later by local police working with the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office. He’s been locked up ever since.
According to the indictment, Burkes faces up to 20 years in prison for obstruction of commerce by robbery, up to 15 years for possession of a firearm by a felon, and the possibility of life in prison or even the death penalty for murder.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan D. Freres will prosecute the case, which involved a multi-agency investigation including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and local police departments.
