A federal grand jury in Maryland has indicted Barnhouser for his alleged role in a sprawling marijuana trafficking operation, authorities announced yesterday.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced the charges against Barnhouser in a statement released to the press, citing the federal court case, MDD, which was filed on July 1, 1977.
Accord to court documents, Barnhouser was charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute marijuana, in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 846. The indictment alleges that Barnhouser and others conspired to traffic large quantities of marijuana across state lines, resulting in significant profits for the organization.
While details of the case remain limited, authorities have confirmed that the investigation was a multi-agency effort involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Maryland State Police.
The indictment marks a significant blow to organized crime in Maryland, and serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar activities. As one law enforcement official noted, ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle and disrupt the networks that fuel this destructive trade.’
Barnhouser’s arraignment is scheduled for a later date, at which time he will enter a plea and face sentencing if convicted.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, with Assistant U.S. Attorney [redacted] leading the prosecution.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized the importance of this case, noting that ‘the prosecution of drug trafficking offenses remains a top priority for this office.’
