TOPEKA, KAN. – In a shocking turn of events, a Topeka man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to operate an interstate sex trafficking business, sending shockwaves through the community.
According to court documents, Barry M. Johnson, 40, of Topeka, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy on Monday, admitting to conspiring with co-defendants to run a Topeka-based prostitution business that operated in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.
The organization, which at times employed as many as 20 females as prostitutes, used websites, social media, and cell phones to advertise sexual services and track its employees. Johnson, who was a key player in the operation, admitted to recruiting and grooming potential sex workers for the organization.
As part of his plea deal, Johnson will face sentencing on February 6, with both parties agreeing to recommend a sentence of 46 months in federal prison. The charges against Johnson stem from his role in the conspiracy, which included notifying the leader of the organization when he had a female ready to work and negotiating payment.
The case against Johnson is the latest in a string of high-profile sex trafficking cases in the region. The Topeka Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Kenney are all credited with their work on the case.
Co-defendants Frank Boswell, 42, and Michaela Hekekia, 36, are set to go to trial on January 3, while Rachel Flenniken, 34, and Sean P. Hall, 47, are awaiting sentencing. Shannon Nelson, 23, is scheduled to be sentenced on January 23.
In all cases, defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The indictments merely contain allegations of criminal conduct.
The guilty plea is a significant development in the ongoing effort to combat sex trafficking in the region. As the investigation continues, it is clear that the authorities are taking a tough stance against those who would seek to exploit and harm others.
