Beating with a Cane Lands Man 30 Months in Prison

A brutal assault that left a man bleeding from a head wound has landed a Gettysburg man in federal prison. Christopher Arpan, 52, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, 2 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

On August 24, 2017, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe law enforcement was dispatched to a house in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, for a report of an individual bleeding from a head wound. Arpan had assaulted the individual by beating him about his head with a wooden cane, causing serious bodily harm including 5 wounds to his head that required multiple staples to close.

Arpan was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 14, 2017, and pled guilty on June 12, 2018. This case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuting the case.

Arpan was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The conviction stems from the violent assault that left the victim with serious injuries.
