BEAUMONT, TX – Jonathan Van Johnson, 36, of Beaumont, Texas, is headed to federal prison after being convicted of trafficking the dangerous street drug PCP. The sentence, handed down today by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone, sends a clear message: pushing poison in Southeast Texas carries a steep price.
Johnson pleaded guilty on March 18, 2014, to possession with intent to distribute phencyclidine (PCP). The feds weren’t messing around – the judge sentenced him to a hefty 87 months behind bars. U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced the conviction, a small victory in a larger war against the drug trade that plagues the region.
The bust went down on May 21, 2013, when law enforcement executed search warrants at Johnson’s Beaumont residence. What they found wasn’t a small stash. Officers recovered approximately 536 grams of PCP – over a pound of the hallucinogenic drug – along with other drugs and paraphernalia clearly linked to large-scale trafficking. This wasn’t some casual user; this was a business.
The investigation, a joint effort between the Beaumont Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), targeted illegal drug activity in the area. Sources on the ground had been feeding information to authorities for months, leading to the raid on Johnson’s home. A federal grand jury indicted Johnson on November 6, 2013, formally charging him with the drug trafficking violations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall L. Fluke led the prosecution, building a solid case based on the evidence seized during the search. The amount of PCP discovered suggests Johnson wasn’t just selling to local users; he was likely distributing to a wider network. The feds are now working to dismantle that network, tracing the flow of drugs and money.
The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on efforts to combat drug trafficking in the Eastern District of Texas. This conviction, while significant, is just one battle in an ongoing struggle. The streets of Beaumont – and cities across America – remain flooded with dangerous substances, and the fight to keep communities safe is far from over.
