BEAUMONT, Texas – A harrowing incident of violence behind bars has culminated in a severe punishment for Jacob Smith. The 23-year-old Forsyth, Missouri native, who was serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution – Medium, has been sentenced to 150 months for his role in the deadly assault of another inmate within the Eastern District of Texas.
Smith pleaded guilty on Apr. 16, 2014, to assault with intent to commit murder. Today, U.S. District Judge Ron Clark handed down the sentence, marking an end to a tragic episode that unfolded in October 2012.
The attack occurred when Smith and another prisoner targeted Edward Lee Bowlin, mistakenly believing him to be incarcerated for crimes involving sexual contact with children. With hands and feet as weapons, they brutalized Bowlin inside his cell. Their assault left Bowlin fighting for his life, suffering from severe head and brain trauma.
Smith’s return to Bowlin’s cell was a deadly continuation of the horror. Bowlin fell into a coma that would prove fatal. On Nov. 25, 2013, Bowlin passed away, leaving behind a family shattered by the tragic event. Smith was indicted on Aug. 7, 2013, following a federal grand jury investigation.
This case was a joint effort of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher T. Tortorice prosecuted the case with determination, ensuring justice was served for the Bowlin family.
Smith’s sentence reflects the gravity of his actions and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers within our correctional facilities. His conviction underscores the commitment of law enforcement to hold violent offenders accountable.
