DAYTON, Ohio – Naser Almadaoji, a 23-year-old Iraqi-born U.S. citizen from Beavercreek, was handed a 10-year federal prison sentence today for attempting to travel overseas to join ISIS-K.
The sentence comes after Almadaoji was apprehended at John Glenn International Airport by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in 2018 as he prepared to board a flight to Afghanistan.
Almadaoji pleaded guilty in November 2021 to providing material support to foreign terrorist organizations, including ISIS and ISIS-K. U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker called Almadaoji “an ideological supporter of terrorism” who aimed to train for violence in America on behalf of the terror group.
According to court documents, Almadaoji purchased a plane ticket to Astana, Kazakhstan, with plans to be smuggled into Afghanistan for ISIS-K military training. He also traveled to Egypt and Jordan earlier that year in an unsuccessful bid to join another designated terror organization, ISIS Wilayat Sinai.
In online communications, Almadaoji sought instructions on making a car bomb and expressed his readiness to assist with terror projects in the United States. He recorded himself pledging allegiance to ISIS leader and translated a document for a supposed contact, claiming it was his duty.
The sentence was announced by Senior U.S. District Judge Walter H. Rice, with Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas A. Dingeldein and Trial Attorney Justin Sher representing the United States in the case.
