BECKLEY, W.Va. – Roger Lee Cousins, 50, of Beckley, is looking at serious time after pleading guilty today to distributing poison in the Mountain State. The feds say Cousins wasn’t picky – cocaine and fentanyl were on the menu for his clientele.
According to court documents, Cousins hooked up with a confidential informant on November 8, 2024, and unloaded 14.66 grams of cocaine. But that wasn’t all. The same transaction included approximately 27.2 grams of fentanyl – enough to kill a lot of people. Cousins pocketed a cool $3,140 for the deadly duo. This wasn’t a one-time deal, either.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with the Beckley/Raleigh County Drug and Violent Crime Unit, dug deeper and found Cousins was a repeat offender. He’d previously sold cocaine and fentanyl on October 21, 2024, then more cocaine on October 29, 2024, and even more fentanyl on December 6, 2024 – all to the same informant. The man was clearly operating with impunity, until the law caught up.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston isn’t showing any sympathy. Cousins is scheduled to be sentenced on January 2, 2026, and faces a maximum of 20 years behind bars, plus a minimum of three years of supervised release after that. A $1 million fine is also on the table. This isn’t a slap on the wrist; it’s a serious attempt to stem the tide of drugs flooding West Virginia.
United States Magistrate Judge Omar J. Aboulhosn presided over the guilty plea. Assistant United States Attorneys Brian D. Parsons, Timothy D. Boggess, and former Assistant United States Attorney Andrew D. Isabell are handling the prosecution. They’ve built a solid case, and Cousins now has plenty of time to reflect on his choices.
