COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Licking County man has confessed to a depraved conspiracy involving the creation and distribution of videos showcasing extreme acts of violence against monkeys. Ronald P. Bedra, of Etna, Ohio, pleaded guilty today to conspiring to create and distribute what authorities are calling “animal crush” videos – a term that barely begins to describe the brutality involved.
Court documents detail a sickening scheme where Bedra collaborated with others to commission and share videos depicting sadistic torture of both baby and adult monkeys. The acts, described as horrific even by seasoned investigators, included the severing of limbs and digits, and the forced, sexual assault of the animals with a heated screwdriver. The level of cruelty is almost beyond comprehension, a descent into pure depravity fueled by online demand.
The conspiracy didn’t stop at simply ordering the abuse. Bedra and his co-conspirators utilized encrypted chat applications to funnel money to individuals in Indonesia willing to carry out the requested acts of torture, all captured on camera. This international element highlights the dark underbelly of the internet and the ability of perpetrators to outsource cruelty for profit. Bedra didn’t limit his distribution to digital channels; he also physically mailed a thumb drive containing 64 videos of monkey torture to a co-conspirator located in Wisconsin.
“This case represents a particularly disturbing form of animal cruelty,” stated a source close to the investigation. “The deliberate and calculated nature of the torture, coupled with the intent to distribute these videos for perverse gratification, is deeply troubling. The fact that money was exchanged for these acts elevates this beyond simple cruelty to a calculated criminal enterprise.”
The announcement of Bedra’s guilty plea came from Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) and U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker for the Southern District of Ohio. The investigation was a joint effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the FBI, demonstrating the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating this type of crime.
The prosecution is being handled by Trial Attorney Mark Romley and Senior Trial Attorney Adam Cullman of ENRD’s Environmental Crimes Section, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Pakiz for the Southern District of Ohio. Sentencing for Ronald P. Bedra has not yet been scheduled, but experts predict a significant prison term given the severity and calculated nature of the crimes to which he has confessed.
