Begay Sentenced to 12 Years for Kidnapping

PHOENIX – In a disturbing case of domestic violence and kidnapping, 37-year-old Roscoe Peter Begay of Tonalea, Arizona, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Begay, a member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on February 7, 2017, when Begay’s residence was the site of a domestic violence call. Begay locked the door and refused to allow law enforcement to enter, keeping the victim in the back bedroom. It wasn’t until the arrival of a Special Response Team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation that Begay relented, allowing officers to apprehend him.

The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Nation Department of Law Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christina J. Reid-Moore handled the prosecution.

As Begay will soon begin serving his 12-year sentence, the victim and the community can finally find some sense of justice and closure. Begay’s actions were a blatant disregard for the law and a clear display of his lack of respect for the rights and safety of his partner.

The kidnapping took place on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation, highlighting the importance of addressing and preventing domestic violence within Native American communities.

Case Number: CR-17-08094-PHX-DLR. Release Number: 2017-025_Begay.
