Benigno Gonzalez-Mendoza, Receipt of Child Pornography, New Jersey 2024

A Jersey City man was sentenced to 108 months in prison for a heinous crime that shocked the community.

Beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary neighborhood, a dark secret lurked in the form of child pornography. Benigno Gonzalez-Mendoza, a 37-year-old resident of Jersey City, New Jersey, was found to be in possession of images and videos that depicted the sexual abuse of children.

According to court documents, Gonzalez-Mendoza knowingly received and possessed these disturbing materials from March 9, 2019, through July 27, 2019. The charges against him were a stark reminder that child predators can reside in our midst, hiding in plain sight.

The sentencing hearing took place on March 9, 2024, where Gonzalez-Mendoza pleaded guilty to one count of receipt of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton imposed the 108-month prison sentence, which will see Gonzalez-Mendoza behind bars for nearly nine years.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Wigenton ordered Gonzalez-Mendoza to serve 10 years of supervised release and pay restitution of $18,000.

The investigation that led to this sentencing was a collaborative effort between the FBI’s Newark office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Special agents of the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge George M. Crouch Jr., worked tirelessly to bring Gonzalez-Mendoza to justice.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Olta Bejleri, who demonstrated her commitment to protecting the vulnerable by working to ensure that Gonzalez-Mendoza faced consequences for his actions.
