ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – A Laguna Pueblo man has been sentenced to prison for a federal sexual abuse conviction that shook a small New Mexico community.
Benjamin Shiosee, 38, a member and resident of Laguna Pueblo, N.M., was sentenced this morning in federal court in Albuquerque, N.M., to 36 months in prison followed by 25 years of supervised release. Shiosee will also be required to register as a sex offender after he completes his prison sentence.
The charges against Shiosee stemmed from an incident on Sept. 4, 2015, on the Laguna Pueblo in Cibola County, N.M., when he allegedly sexually abused a patient. The alleged abuse was discovered and reported, and Shiosee was arrested on March 1, 2016, on a criminal complaint alleging the crime.
Shiosee, a former certified nursing assistant, pled guilty to an information charging him with abusive sexual contact on April 21, 2016. In entering the guilty plea, Shiosee admitted to the crime, stating that he had sexually abused the victim within the Laguna Pueblo.
This case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of the FBI and the Laguna Pueblo Tribal Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Spindle prosecuted the case.
Shiosee’s sentencing is a significant development in the case, bringing a measure of closure to the victim and the community. The Laguna Pueblo is a small, tight-knit community, and the alleged abuse was widely felt.
Shiosee’s prison sentence and supervised release are a reminder that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable for their actions. The case serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to commit similar crimes, and a reminder that the community will not tolerate such behavior.
