Austin K Sims, Dealing Firearms Without License, Illinois 2018

Lawman Austin K. Sims, a 37-year-old resident of Williamson County, Illinois, has been meted out a severe sentence for his flagrant disregard of the gun laws. Sims was sentenced to 60 months behind bars and two years of supervised release on February 13, 2018, in United States District Court in Benton.

The sentence comes after Sims was charged with three counts related to his unlawful dealing of firearms. He pleaded guilty to all charges, including engaging in the business of dealing firearms without a license, possession of a firearm while being an unlawful user of controlled substances, and making false statements to law enforcement during their investigation.

United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Donald S. Boyce, announced Sims’s sentence, which also mandates two years of supervised release following his prison term. Sims was indicted on July 12, 2017, marking a year-long investigation into his illegal activities.

The ATF led the investigation with support from the Marion, Illinois Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Liam Coonan and Amanda Robertson handled the prosecution, ensuring that justice was served for the communities affected by Sims’s actions.

For Sims, this is a heavy price to pay for his brazen disregard for firearm regulations. His sentence sends a clear message that illegal gun dealing will not be tolerated in Illinois.

Sims’s conviction underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal firearms activity and protect the public from such dangerous individuals. The sentence is expected to have a deterrent effect, potentially sparing future victims the pain and suffering associated with Sims’s criminal behavior.
