Bethany Thomas, 27, Pleads Guilty to Murder on Choctaw Indian Reservation
JACKSON, MISS. – In a shocking turn of events, Bethany Thomas, 27, of the Bogue Chitto Community of the Choctaw Indian Reservation, pleaded guilty to murder on May 11, 2023.
According to court documents, Thomas stabbed the victim with a knife, resulting in the victim’s death. The brutal crime took place on the Choctaw Indian Reservation in Mississippi.
The case was brought to light after a federal grand jury indicted Thomas on the charge of murder in the second degree in November of 2021. Thomas, who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, is scheduled to be sentenced on August 10, 2023.
U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca commended the work of the Choctaw Police Department of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who investigated the case. “Their tireless efforts led to the guilty plea and will bring closure to the victim’s family,” LaMarca said.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin J. Payne and Special Assistant United States Attorney Brian K. Burns. Thomas faces a maximum possible penalty of 15 years in prison, a decision to be made by a federal district judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
As the people of the Choctaw Indian Reservation demand justice, Bethany Thomas’s guilty plea serves as a reminder of the severity of violent crimes and the importance of law enforcement’s role in maintaining community safety.
