Bhavesh Lathiya Pleads Guilty to Fentanyl Precursor Smuggling, USA, 2024

Bhavesh Lathiya, a 41-year-old executive from Surat, India, pleaded guilty today to distributing and smuggling fentanyl precursor chemicals to the United States.

Lathiya was the leader and founder of Raxuter Chemicals, a company based in Surat, India, that illegally sold and smuggled more than 50 pounds of chemicals commonly used to manufacture fentanyl.

This guilty plea marks the first felony conviction of an India-based supplier of fentanyl precursor chemicals.

Today’s proceeding was held before United States District Judge Pamela K. Chen.

Lathiya’s actions have far-reaching consequences, as the chemicals he smuggled can be used to manufacture large quantities of fentanyl, a highly addictive and deadly opioid.

When sentenced, Lathiya faces up to 40 years’ imprisonment.

The guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement, who have been working tirelessly to combat the opioid epidemic and dismantle international supply chains of illicit chemicals.

As the country grapples with the devastating impact of fentanyl, this conviction serves as a reminder that those responsible for fueling the crisis will be held accountable.

The investigation into Lathiya’s activities was led by the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, in conjunction with international partners.

Lathiya’s company, Raxuter Chemicals, will also face consequences for its role in facilitating the smuggling operation.

The case highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime and the need for vigilance in monitoring global supply chains.
