Denver – Miguel Antonio Garcia, 40, of Denver, received a 280-month (23.3-year) sentence for federal gun and drug convictions on May 10, 2019. U.S. District Court Judge Raymond P. Moore handed down the harsh penalty, along with an additional five years of supervised release.
Garcia was first charged on July 13, 2018, following a bizarre incident where he was reported walking Denver streets with a Bible and backpack. During a subsequent encounter, he produced firearms from his waistband and a Bible case before fleeing the scene. He was apprehended minutes later without the weapons but was linked to the crime through recovered items.
In court documents and trial proceedings, it was revealed that Garcia’s backpack contained a loaded 10mm semi-automatic handgun, a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun, approximately 360 grams of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia. His Bible had indentation marks matching the unloaded guns found in his possession.
U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn emphasized the severity of Garcia’s crimes, stating, “Dangerous drug dealers need to be removed from our community.” ATF Denver Special Agent in Charge David Booth echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
This case was investigated by the ATF and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Peter McNeilly and Conor Flanigan. Garcia’s sentence is now a stark reminder of the consequences facing violent drug traffickers.
