Hate Crime Rocks Indiana Community
Indianapolis, IN – Billie Davis, 56, is behind bars after a vicious racially motivated attack on a woman of Chinese descent left her battered and shaken.
According to a federal indictment, Davis willfully caused bodily injury to the victim and attempted to do so through the use of a knife, all because of the victim’s race and national origin.
The indictment also alleges that the offense included an attempt to kill the victim, leaving the community reeling in shock and outrage.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Zachary A. Myers made the announcement, vowing to hold perpetrators accountable for their heinous crimes.
The FBI Indianapolis Field Office and Bloomington Resident Agency investigated the case, with assistance from the Bloomington Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter A. Blackett for the Southern District of Indiana and Trial Attorney Anita Channapati of the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section are prosecuting the case, determined to bring justice to the victim and her family.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The community is left to pick up the pieces and wonder how such a heinous crime could occur on their doorstep.
