The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) today announced the collapse of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme orchestrated by high-profile financier John Q. Thompson, who faces staggering civil penalties for his fraudulent activities.
According to the FDIC, Thompson and his associates lured investors with false promises of guaranteed returns on investments, ultimately bilking them out of an estimated $100 million. Thompson’s empire, once a symbol of wealth and success, has now crumbled under the weight of his deceitful schemes.
The FDIC issued 15 orders in January against Thompson and related entities, including six orders to pay civil money penalties (CMPs) totaling over $50 million. The agency also imposed combined prohibition orders and consent orders, ensuring that Thompson is banned from participating in any future financial activities.
‘This Ponzi scheme was nothing short of a criminal enterprise, preying on the unsuspecting public for personal gain,’ said FDIC spokesperson LaJuan Williams-Young. ‘The FDIC will continue to take aggressive action against individuals and institutions that threaten the stability of our financial system.’
Thompson, aged 45, of Miami, Florida, faces numerous charges including securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. If convicted, he could face decades in prison. The FDIC is urging any victims of Thompson’s scheme to come forward and file a claim.
