Bills for Teachers, Police, and Firemen Raise Eyebrows in D.C.

In the scorching spring of 1924, Washington, D.C. was abuzz with the possibility of significant changes to the pay of its educators, law enforcement officers, and firefighters. Two crucial bills, the teachers’ pay bill and the police and firemen’s pay bill, were on the cusp of being reported to the Senate, sparking heated debates and raising more than a few eyebrows. The teachers’ bill had already cleared the House, and a conference between Senator Capper of Kansas and Senator King of Utah was set to take place at 2 o’clock the next afternoon to iron out the details. Senator Capper expressed hope that the bill could be reported back to the full Senate committee by Wednesday, paving the way for its swift passage. However, Senator King, a Utah stalwart, was said to be opposed to some of the proposed increases for higher-paid teachers and school officials, and he was expected to push for amendments to address these concerns.
