Gun violence has been a persistent issue in Portland, Oregon, with the city experiencing a significant number of shootings in recent years. In an effort to combat this problem, the Portland Police Bureau’s Gun Violence Reduction Team has been working tirelessly to reduce gun violence in the city.
Recently, United States Attorney Billy J. Williams expressed his support for the Gun Violence Reduction Team in a letter to the Portland City Council. In the letter, Williams highlighted the team’s importance in reducing gun violence in the city and emphasized the need for continued support for this critical public safety effort.
The Gun Violence Reduction Team is part of the Portland Police Bureau’s Tactical Operations Division and is made up of officers with significant regional expertise and a deep knowledge of the community. The team is part of a multi-agency metro region collaboration to reduce gun violence in Multnomah County, which includes partners from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Gresham Police Department, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, Oregon State Police, Oregon State Crime Lab, FBI, and ATF.
As part of the Justice Department’s National Project Safe Neighborhood program, the Portland Area Crime Gun Initiative was formed in August 2017. The initiative aims to reduce gun violence in the metro area through improved policies, practices, and collaboration among law enforcement agencies. The Gun Violence Reduction Team has been a critical partner in this effort, using objective ballistics technology and shared investigative resources to connect the dots more rapidly on shootings and increase the opportunity to prevent the next tragedy.
The team’s efforts have shown promising results, with data and successes contained in a recent Portland Police Bureau press release on gun violence in Portland. The team has also been active in training other investigators in Oregon and Washington, and local and federal partners have committed resources to this effort, including providing needed training and federally funded equipment for investigators.
In his letter, Williams emphasized the importance of continued support for the Gun Violence Reduction Team, stating that the team is a critical partner in the Portland Area Crime Gun Initiative and that their work is essential to reducing gun violence in the city. Williams’ support for the team is a significant endorsement of the important work that they are doing to keep the community safe.
The Gun Violence Reduction Team’s work is a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement in reducing gun violence. By working together with local and federal partners, the team is able to leverage resources and expertise to tackle this complex issue. As the city continues to grapple with the problem of gun violence, the Gun Violence Reduction Team remains a vital component of the solution.
