Billy J. Williams, a long-time employee of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, has been appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. This appointment was made by Attorney General Loretta Lynch and took effect on December 12, 2015.
Williams has a long history with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, dating back to October 2000. In the years leading up to his appointment, he held several key positions, including Acting United States Attorney, First Assistant, Chief of the Criminal Division, Chief of the Violent Crimes Unit, and Indian Country AUSA/Tribal Liaison.
Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Williams served as a Sr. Deputy District Attorney in Multnomah County. During his time in this role, he supervised the Career Criminal Unit and prosecuted a wide range of major crimes, including aggravated murder, adult and child sex offenses, domestic violence, narcotics trafficking, vehicular homicide crimes, and investigations of officer-involved shootings.
Williams received his law degree in 1989 from the Willamette University College of Law.
With this appointment, Williams will serve in an interim capacity pursuant to the Attorney General’s authority to appoint under 28 U.S.C. Section 546. The appointment is effective as of December 12, 2015.
