On a chilly March morning in 1916, Billy Sunday, the infamous evangelist known for his unorthodox methods, made an unexpected visit to the Episcopal residence in Baltimore, Maryland. Accompanied by his wife, Ma Sunday, and Dr. Howard A. Kelly, the ‘Radium King,’ Sunday arrived at the cardinal’s doorstep, leaving many in the city wondering what had brought him to the cardinal’s doorstep. The trio was received by Cardinal Gibbons, resplendent in his black cassock and red zuchetto, and the Rev. Louis R. Stickney, the cardinal’s chancellor.
