Donald Grant, Assisting in Preparing a False Tax Return, New York 2024

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – The grimy world of financial misdeeds was shook today as 40-year-old Binghamton resident Donald Grant faced the music. He pleaded guilty to assisting in preparing a false tax return and attempting to interfere with the administration of Internal Revenue Laws.

This isn’t just any crime. Grant, a man who should have been trusted to handle hard-earned tax refunds, instead turned to deceit over four years. His scheme? Preparing twenty-seven tax returns brimming with lies about business income, losses, and educational expenses. The result was over $100,000 in refunds funneled into his clients’ pockets—money they weren’t entitled to.

But Grant’s cunning did not stop there. He tampered with the IRS-Criminal Investigation’s inquiry by dishing out counterfeit profit and loss statements, egging on clients to lie to investigators, and even providing false information himself when questioned by the IRS.

The justice system will have its say on March 9, 2017, before United States District Judge David N. Hurd. Grant is looking at up to three years in the slammer for his crimes, a maximum fine of $100,000 for his role in preparing the false returns, and another $5,000 for interfering with Internal Revenue Laws. Plus, he could be stuck paying restitution back to the IRS.

This case has been a joint effort by the New York Field Office of the IRS-Criminal Investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Levine. Let’s hope this plea is the end of Grant’s fraudulent ways, but for now, the grimy truth remains: he turned a trusted profession into his downfall.
