BitConnect Mastermind Brought Down in $2 Billion Cryptocurrency Swindle
LOS ANGELES – A brazen cryptocurrency investment scheme that roped in over $2 billion from unsuspecting investors around the globe has come to a screeching halt. Glenn Arcaro, the Los Angeles-based mastermind behind the BitConnect scheme, has pleaded guilty to his role in the massive conspiracy.
According to documents filed in federal court, Arcaro conspired with others to peddle BitConnect’s proprietary coin offering and digital currency exchange as a lucrative investment opportunity. However, in reality, the scheme was a textbook Ponzi operation, with earlier investors being paid off with money from later investors.
Through the use of social media, Arcaro and his cohorts made false and misleading statements to convince investors that BitConnect was a safe and profitable bet. They even went so far as to mock investors who questioned the legitimacy of the scheme, posting videos that ridiculed those who doubted the true identity of BitConnect’s owner.
Arcaro, who sat atop a large network of promoters in North America, earned as much as 15 percent of every investment into the BitConnect Lending Program. He also received portions of all investments from a hidden slush fund.
As part of his plea agreement, Arcaro admitted to exploiting investor interest in cryptocurrency, using social media to spread false information and concealing material facts about the scheme.
The BitConnect scheme is believed to be the largest cryptocurrency fraud ever charged criminally, with thousands of individuals worldwide losing millions of dollars. The scheme’s operators, including Arcaro, lined their pockets with millions of dollars, money that was supposed to be invested in a new cryptocurrency with a high rate of return.
The FBI, IRS-CI, and other law enforcement agencies have been working tirelessly to bring down the scheme and hold the perpetrators accountable. The case serves as a stark cautionary tale about the dangers of cryptocurrency investment schemes and the importance of scrutinizing the burgeoning industry.
Glenn Arcaro’s guilty plea and the subsequent collapse of the BitConnect scheme send a clear message to those who would seek to defraud the investing public: the FBI and other law enforcement agencies will not stop until all fraudsters are identified and held accountable.
