Black Hawk Man Pleads Guilty To Embezzlement

Black Hawk, SD – In a shocking turn of events, Dennis Mallow, a 47-year-old Black Hawk resident, has pleaded guilty to embezzling over $30,000 from the South Dakota Army National Guard. The brazen crime, which spanned nearly three years, has left many in the community reeling.

According to court documents, Mallow embezzled toolboxes, tools, equipment, gear, and other property from the South Dakota Army National Guard between October 1, 2009 and September 7, 2012. The total value of the stolen goods exceeds $30,000, a staggering amount that has caught the attention of law enforcement officials.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the plea deal, which was reached on May 14, 2013. Mallow appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy and entered a guilty plea to Theft of Government Property. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

The investigation into Mallow’s activities was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen will be handling the case.

A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date will be set at a later time. Mallow was released on bond pending sentencing, a move that has sparked concern among community leaders.
