WILMINGTON, N.C. – Shaquille Gregg, a 29-year-old member of the Bloods gang, was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison after he abandoned a stolen, loaded firearm on a daycare playground during a police chase. On February 21, 2024, Gregg pled guilty to possession of a stolen firearm.
This case is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement, who intercepted the defendant and recovered the gun before it could fall into the hands of a child. U.S. Attorney Michael Easley praised the officers involved in the apprehension, emphasizing their swift action that potentially saved lives.
According to court documents, Gregg was stopped by Wilmington Police Department on January 26, 2022, for a traffic violation. He fled and was pursued by police before being caught. The investigation revealed that Gregg’s DNA was found on the stolen Smith and Wesson pistol discovered in the daycare playground.
Gregg has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for assault with intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a felon, distribution of heroin, and carrying a concealed gun. His previous record includes a shooting incident in 2014 and a 75-102 month prison sentence for the crime.
Michael Easley announced the sentencing after it was imposed by U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle. The case was investigated by the FBI’s Coastal Carolina Safe Streets Gang Task Force, ATF, Wilmington Police Department, and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Special Assistant United States Attorney William Van Trigt prosecuted the case.
This conviction is part of the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), a collaborative effort to combat violent crime through strategic enforcement and interagency coordination. The case highlights the ongoing commitment to community safety and the fight against gang violence in North Carolina.
