ALBUQUERQUE – Jerome Phillips, 34, of Bloomfield, New Mexico, is headed to federal prison for five years after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a botched street stop and subsequent discovery of drugs and a firearm. The sentence, handed down today, reflects a hard line against those who peddle poison and pack heat in our communities.
The case unfolded on April 7, 2023, when Bloomfield Police Department officers spotted Phillips on a public street. Knowing he was wanted on an outstanding warrant, they moved to detain him. Instead of cooperating, Phillips bolted, triggering a foot pursuit. In a desperate attempt to ditch evidence, Phillips reached for his waistband and tossed a firearm onto the pavement. It wasn’t enough to shake the law.
The pursuit ended with Phillips surrendering to officers. A search revealed he wasn’t just running from a warrant; he was also carrying approximately 7.87 grams of pure methamphetamine. That’s enough to fuel addiction and misery for countless individuals, and Phillips will now answer for his role in that cycle.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced the sentence, signaling a continued commitment to dismantling drug and firearms networks operating in New Mexico. “This sentence sends a clear message,” Uballez stated. “We will aggressively prosecute those who endanger our communities through drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession.”
The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office spearheaded the investigation, with crucial support from the Bloomfield Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Joseph M. Spindle handled the prosecution as part of a collaborative initiative between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. This joint effort allows for both state and federal charges to be leveraged against criminals who operate across jurisdictional lines.
Phillips will serve his five-year sentence with no opportunity for parole. Upon release, he will face an additional three years of supervised release, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored. This isn’t just about punishment; it’s about attempting to steer Phillips away from a life of crime, though the Grimy Times remains skeptical of true rehabilitation.
