Portland Man Pleads Guilty to Cyberstalking and Harassment
A Portland man has pleaded guilty to cyberstalking and anonymous telephone harassment after making thousands of threatening calls to seven individuals in Pennsylvania over an eight-year period.
Bob Ibenne Ugwa, 50, of Portland, pleaded guilty on June 24, 2019, to the charges, which stem from calls made between 2011 and 2018. In the calls, Ugwa threatened or harassed each victim by breathing heavily, moaning, and saying sexually explicit things.
The victims, who were targeted from Oregon, made multiple unsuccessful attempts to stop Ugwa from calling, citing substantial emotional distress. Telephone records were used to confirm Ugwa’s threatening calls.
Ugwa faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. He will be sentenced on September 10, 2019, before U.S. District Court Judge Michael W. Mosman.
The case was investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by Hannah Horsley, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.
The guilty plea marks a significant milestone in the case, which has been ongoing for several years. The victims, who have not been named, have reportedly suffered significant emotional distress as a result of Ugwa’s actions.
Ugwa’s case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of cyberstalking and harassment. The FBI and other law enforcement agencies take such crimes very seriously and will continue to investigate and prosecute those who engage in this behavior.
