HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A recent traffic stop on Interstate 64 in Hurricane, West Virginia, led to the arrest of a Detroit man accused of fentanyl trafficking.
Bobby James Mitchell, 41, a Detroit man, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. According to court documents, a Hurricane Police officer found 499 pills containing approximately 54 grams of fentanyl in Mitchell’s vehicle during a traffic stop on December 11, 2021.
Mitchell admitted he intended to sell the fentanyl, which is a powerful synthetic opioid that has contributed to a national overdose crisis. The amount of fentanyl seized in this case is equivalent to over 54,000 lethal doses, highlighting the significant threat that fentanyl poses to public health.
Mitchell is scheduled to be sentenced on August 15, 2022, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $1 million fine.
United States Attorney Will Thompson praised the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Hurricane Police Department for conducting the investigation. The DEA works tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle fentanyl trafficking organizations, and their efforts have led to numerous convictions and seizures of illicit substances.
