Montgomery, Alabama — Franklin Otis Boiner, 58, of Montgomery, has been apprehended for a chilling bomb threat that shook the local legal community. The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, George L. Beck, announced the arrest today.
The drama unfolded on March 5, 2013, when the Montgomery 911 Call Center fielded a call from an unknown male who claimed two bombs would detonate at the District Court by 9:30 a.m. The threat prompted simultaneous evacuations of both federal and state courthouses. Bomb technicians and detection dogs were deployed to ensure safety before re-entry.
Law enforcement, utilizing call tracing and fingerprint analysis, traced the phone call back to Boiner, who was coincidentally scheduled for a court hearing in the Montgomery County Courthouse that morning. The arrest underscores the swift and decisive action of local law enforcement, with U.S. Attorney Beck commending Sheriff Marshall’s office for their diligence.
Jeffrey L. Fulton, Special Agent in Charge of ATF, credited the collaborative efforts for the successful outcome. Boiner now faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison if convicted, along with fines and supervised release. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Joint Terrorism Task Force, ATF, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, and the Montgomery Police Department collaborated on this investigation.
