BOISE, ID – Davis Jacobs, 27, of Boise, Idaho, is facing the consequences after a shipment of illegal Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL) landed him in federal court. On March 28, 2017, Jacobs received a one-year probation sentence, including six months of home detention, 200 hours of community service, and a $1,000 fine for unlawful possession of the controlled substance, according to Acting United States Attorney Rafael Gonzalez.
The bust originated not in Boise, but hundreds of miles away at the United States Customs and Border Protection facility in San Francisco, California. On April 13, 2016, agents intercepted a suspicious parcel originating from Hong Kong, addressed directly to Jacobs’ Boise residence. The package was deceptively labeled as “paint tools,” a common tactic employed by those attempting to smuggle illicit goods.
What agents found inside wasn’t art supplies, but a substantial quantity of liquid GBL – a whopping 1,218 gross grams. GBL is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, meaning it carries a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. The sheer volume seized suggests Jacobs wasn’t just experimenting; he was stockpiling.
According to the plea agreement filed in court, Jacobs admitted to knowingly purchasing the GBL, fully aware of its illegal status and controlled substance classification. This wasn’t a case of mistaken identity or a shipping error. Jacobs intentionally ordered a dangerous and illegal substance, and now he’s paying the price.
The investigation, led by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with crucial support from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, highlights the ongoing efforts to intercept illegal shipments at the border and hold accountable those who attempt to circumvent the law. This case demonstrates that no matter the method of concealment, federal agents are vigilant in protecting our communities.
While the sentence includes a period of home detention and community service, the conviction will remain on Jacobs’ record, potentially impacting future employment and opportunities. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments. The information was filed as a criminal information, suggesting Jacobs cooperated with authorities.
