Jose Luis Hernandez, 26, of Rupert, Idaho, is headed to federal prison for five years after admitting to distributing methamphetamine in southern Idaho. The sentence, handed down today in Pocatello, marks the latest conviction in an ongoing crackdown on organized drug networks in the Magic Valley region.
Hernandez was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison by Chief U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill, who also ordered the defendant to serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration. The charge: distribution of methamphetamine, a crime Hernandez knowingly committed on multiple occasions, including a key transaction on March 14, 2016.
Court documents reveal Hernandez sold meth to a confidential informant in Burley, Idaho, on several dates. In total, he distributed 81 grams of actual methamphetamine—pure, potent, and destined for the streets. Authorities say the sales were part of a coordinated drug operation spanning county lines and involving multiple players.
Now, the net is closing in on the rest of the crew. Co-conspirators James Jones, William Walker, and Miguel Otaegui are set for sentencing on March 1, 21, and 22, respectively, all before Judge Winmill at the federal courthouse in Pocatello. Their cases are expected to expose deeper layers of the distribution chain.
The investigation was led by the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a high-level federal initiative targeting major drug trafficking organizations. Key partners included the Drug Enforcement Administration, Mini-Cassia Drug Task Force, Cassia County Sheriff’s Office, and Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office—agencies working in lockstep to dismantle supply networks.
OCDETF, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, provides critical resources to federal and state agencies pursuing large-scale narcotics operations. This case, federal prosecutors say, is a textbook example of how coordinated law enforcement efforts can disrupt and dismantle drug rings—starting with the dealers and reaching all the way to the top.
