William A. Giordani, Bomb Hoax Extortion, New Hampshire 2023

A New Hampshire man has been sentenced to 3 years of probation for orchestrating a deadly bomb hoax at Harvard University.

William A. Giordani, 55, of Manchester, New Hampshire, made a series of extortionate bomb threats against Harvard University in April 2023, causing the evacuation of the Science Center Plaza and surrounding academic buildings.

The threats culminated in the controlled detonation of a hoax device on April 13, 2023, after a bomb squad from the Cambridge Police Department assessed and disabled the device.

Giordani had been recruited to join the extortion scheme via a Craigslist advertisement, and once he knew he had been recruited, he had an obligation to report the scheme to authorities. Instead, he deleted incriminating text messages, told his girlfriend not to speak to anyone about it, and went on the run from police.

Giordani pleaded guilty to one count of concealing a federal felony in January 2024 and was sentenced to 3 years of probation by U.S. District Court Judge Angel Kelley.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. McNeil of the National Security Unit prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Boston Division, the Harvard University Police Department, and the Cambridge Police Department, with assistance from the Nashua Police Department.

The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of bomb hoaxes and the importance of reporting suspicious activity to authorities.

Giordani’s sentence is a warning to those who would seek to exploit fear and chaos for personal gain.
