Christopher Faschan, Unlawful Possession of Destructive Devices, New Jersey 2022

A 31-year-old Morris County man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for possessing bombs and guns, according to federal authorities.

Christopher Faschan, of Landing, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of destructive devices and one count of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, as reported in court documents.

On February 1, 2019, Faschan detonated a bomb in the area of Lake Lackawanna in Stanhope, which led to a subsequent investigation. During an interview with law enforcement agents on February 4, 2019, Faschan admitted to igniting the bomb, describing it as weighing two pounds and consisting of Potassium Perchlorate, Aluminum Powder, and Tannerite.

Law enforcement agents executed a court-authorized search of Faschan’s home and recovered a cache of weapons, ammunition, firearms, explosive devices, and precursor materials, further solidifying the evidence against him.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Brian R. Martinotti sentenced Faschan to three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down in Newark federal court.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI, the Byram Police Department, the Roxbury Police Department, the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited these agencies with the investigation leading to the charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean C. Sovolos represented the government in the case, while defense counsel John Whipple Esq. represented Faschan. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the severe consequences faced by those who engage in such illicit activities.
