Tire Iron Assault Lands Eagle Butte Man Behind Bars
Randall Bear Eagle, a 30-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 24 months in custody for his involvement in a violent altercation.
According to court documents, Bear Eagle got into a verbal argument with his half-brother on July 5, 2014. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, and Bear Eagle picked up a tire iron, assaulting the victim and hitting him in the head.
Bear Eagle was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 15, 2014, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He pleaded guilty to Assault with a Dangerous Weapon on December 16, 2014.
U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on March 9, 2015, as part of a deal that also included 2 years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuting the case. Bear Eagle was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence.
The conviction serves as a reminder of the seriousness with which the justice system approaches cases involving assault with a dangerous weapon. As Bear Eagle begins his time behind bars, the community can take some solace in knowing that justice has been served.
