Booker Sentenced to 12 Years for ATF Officer Assault in Jackson

De’Vadrick Markevin Booker, 24, of Jackson, Mississippi, was handed a 144-month sentence for assaulting a federal law enforcement officer and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime. The sentencing occurred on February 8, 2023, after a November 2022 trial where a federal jury found him guilty.

The incident took place on September 8, 2020, when Booker opened fire on an ATF agent responding to a gunfire investigation in Jackson’s residential area. Miraculously, the agent avoided injury. “But by the grace of God, this federal agent did not become a statistic,” United States Attorney Darren J. LaMarca commented.

LaMarca emphasized that the sentence sends a clear message about the U.S. Attorney’s office’s commitment to prosecute violent criminals who disregard law and life. ATF New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the collaborative effort of federal, state, and local law enforcement in securing the lengthy sentence.

“For the next 12 years, the citizens of Jackson are safer from this defendant,” LaMarca said. “The U.S. Attorney’s office will not waver in its commitment to prosecute those violent criminals.”

The ATF led the investigation into the shooting, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica S. Terrill, Kevin J. Payne, and Bert Carraway handled the prosecution.
