TUCSON, Ariz. – A Mexican national learned a harsh lesson Tuesday about attacking those sworn to protect the border. Mario Garcia-Estrada, 26, of Hidalgo, Mexico, was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison followed by 36 months of supervised release after pleading guilty to two counts of Assault on a Federal Officer. The attack, frankly, was savage.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of March 4, 2023, near Bisbee, Arizona. Garcia-Estrada illegally crossed the border from Mexico and was quickly spotted by United States Border Patrol (USBP) surveillance cameras. An agent responded to the location and found Garcia-Estrada attempting to conceal himself. After confirming Garcia-Estrada’s illegal entry, the agent moved to place him under arrest, seizing his cell phone and identification.
That’s when things turned violent. As the agent attempted to secure Garcia-Estrada in her patrol vehicle, he violently shoved her to the ground. The assault didn’t stop there. Garcia-Estrada proceeded to repeatedly punch the agent in the face and head before taking off on foot. The agent suffered a fractured nose and additional injuries as a direct result of Garcia-Estrada’s brutality.
Fortunately, a USBP camera operator maintained visual contact with Garcia-Estrada, providing critical tracking information to responding agents. They quickly located and apprehended him, bringing an end to the dangerous situation. This wasn’t some minor scuffle; it was a calculated attack on a federal officer doing her job.
The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI Phoenix Division’s Sierra Vista office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Houston, of the District of Arizona, Tucson, successfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Garcia-Estrada faced the consequences of his actions. Case Number: CR-23-00321-SHR-BGM. Release Number: 2025-143_Garcia-Estrada.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by Border Patrol agents every day. While the debate over border policy rages on, the reality on the ground is often one of violence and aggression towards those tasked with enforcing the law. Garcia-Estrada will have plenty of time to reflect on his choices behind bars. For more information on the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, visit http://www.justice.gov/usao/az/.
