Julio Villa-Urzua, Human Smuggling, California 2023

⏱ 2 min read

This week, federal prosecutors in Southern California took on a staggering 151 border-related cases, including charges of human smuggling and drug trafficking. The crimes were committed by individuals like Julio Villa-Urzua, a Mexican national who attempted to bring in 929 pounds of liquid methamphetamine, and Edgar Gonzalez Huales, a Guatemalan national who transported undocumented aliens. The cases were filed in the Southern District of California, which spans San Diego and Imperial counties and shares a 140-mile border with Mexico. The arrests were made between July 2 and July 6, with the help of Customs and Border Protection officers and Border Patrol agents.

Villa-Urzua’s case is particularly notable, as he attempted to smuggle the massive quantity of methamphetamine into the US by dissolving it into the fuel tank of a semi-truck. Gonzalez Huales, on the other hand, was caught after a traffic stop in Boulevard, where he ordered two undocumented aliens to exit his car and run before speeding away in his white BMW sedan.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is one of the busiest in the country, with a high volume of border-related crimes to prosecute. In addition to these cases, the office also handles proactive cases related to terrorism, organized crime, and other serious offenses.

The Southern District of California includes the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the world’s busiest land border crossing, which connects San Diego to Tijuana. The area is a hotbed of criminal activity, with smugglers and traffickers constantly seeking to exploit the border for their own gain.
