A shocking indictment has surfaced in Arizona, revealing a disturbing case of child pornography and exploitation involving a high-ranking Border Patrol agent, Nereo Mejia Gomez Jr.
Gomez, a 41-year-old agent based in Yuma, Arizona, is facing serious charges, including Production of Child Pornography, Distributing and Possessing Child Pornography, and Possession of an Unregistered Firearm.
According to the indictment, Gomez produced child pornography four times between November 2022 and March 2023, involving a 15- and 16-year-old girl. He allegedly distributed child pornography five times in February and March 2024 using a facility of interstate commerce, and possessed child pornography and an unregistered firearm in April 2024.
The indictment alleges that Gomez’s crimes carry a potential sentence of 15-30 years in prison for Production of Child Pornography, 20 years in prison for each count of Distributing and Possessing Child Pornography, and 10 years in prison for Possession of an Unregistered Firearm. The charges also come with a potential fine of up to $250,000 and a lifetime term of supervised release.
An indictment, as defined by the DOJ, is simply a method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. Gomez is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation is being led by Homeland Security Investigations, with the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, handling the prosecution. The Yuma Sector of the Border Patrol has been cooperative in the investigation.
Gomez is currently out on release pending trial. If found guilty, he faces a minimum of 15 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions.
