PITTSBURGH, PA – Dorian Boyd, 26, formerly of Braddock, Pennsylvania, is headed to federal prison for three years after admitting to his role as a heroin and cocaine base distributor for the “SCO” neighborhood gang. U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab handed down the sentence today, along with three years of supervised release.
The case stems from a long-term investigation by the Greater Pittsburgh Safe Streets Task Force into drug trafficking in Braddock. Boyd was identified as a close associate of “SCO” and its leader, Howard McFadden. Federal authorities obtained a wiretap authorization in January 2019, which ran through May 2019, revealing Boyd’s direct involvement in the gang’s drug operation. Boyd, along with 32 others, were indicted in June 2019.
Intercepted communications from three separate phones confirmed Boyd wasn’t just a street-level runner, but a key distributor. He initially worked as a courier for McFadden, but quickly took on responsibility for managing one of the gang’s drug phones, directly coordinating sales with customers. Boyd would arrange meetups at the Library Street basketball courts parking lot, or at his residence on 13th Street, to finalize transactions.
The bust wasn’t limited to drugs. On June 12, 2019, a raid of Boyd’s residence yielded two firearms, one of which was found on a kitchen bookshelf, loaded with a round in the chamber and a full magazine. This discovery added a weapons charge to Boyd’s already serious narcotics trafficking conviction. The presence of the loaded firearm underscores the dangerous nature of the gang’s activities.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca L. Silinski prosecuted the case. U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady praised the collaborative efforts of the multi-agency team, spearheaded by the FBI. Partners included the DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Allegheny County Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office Bureau of Narcotics, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, with support from Monroeville, Penn Hills, and Wilkinsburg police departments, as well as Allegheny County Adult Probation.
This case is part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program, a Department of Justice initiative established in 1982 to dismantle major drug trafficking organizations. OCDETF combines federal, state, and local resources to target the most serious criminal threats, and this prosecution is a clear demonstration of its effectiveness in taking down players like Dorian Boyd and the “SCO” gang.
